BOAT SAFETY CHECKLIST

A Coast Guard approved personal flotation device should be worn by each person travelling to and from the blind. Camo float coats, float pants, or float suits are even better choices than traditional personal flotation devices because they not only provide buoyancy, but also considerable protection from hypothermia.

Do not overload your boat. Note the capacity plate on your watercraft indicating how much horsepower and weight it can handle. Overloading can bring a dangerous loss in freaboard. Consider bulk as well as weight.

Ask yourself if you have plenty of room to move around.

Get an up-to-the-hour weather report before you leave home. Keep an eye out for weather changes while you hunt.

Let family and friends know where you are going and the approximate time you expect to return.

Observe safe gun handling practices. Do not carry loaded firearms in the boat.

Carry a fire extinguisher aboard, and make sure it is readily available and accessible.

Assemble a box of emergency supplies, including motor repair parts and tools, and a basic first aid kit.
